Adelaide Destinations

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and the gateway to the Outback, world famous wine regions and the Murray River. The city offers great opportunities for shopping along Rundle Mall, dining at over 700 fantastic restaurants, plus art, culture and museums.

A short tram ride from the cruise ship terminal takes you into the historic Port Adelaide district, a little further on and you are in the heart of this cosmopolitan city, set out in the mid 1800's in a regular grid format, the city bounded on all sides by open spaces and parks.  Adelaide has an extensive network of public transport, buses and trams, take one out to the trendy Glenelg beach suburb. This is a very tourist friendly city.

Easily reached on a day tour from the Port are some of the famous wine regions, the Barossa, McLaren Vale and the Clare Valley. The historic town of Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills is noted for its Germanic origins and also has a number of great wineries. Car buffs will be interested in the National Motor Museum at Birdwood. You need more than one day to really appreciate all that Adelaide and its surrounding regions can offer.  See below for a selection of some of the destinations we visit on our tours.

If you are staying longer then you will have time to head south along the Fleurieu Peninsula and on to the third largest island of Australia, Kangaroo Island.  This is a great destination if you want to observe wildlife in its native habitat.

The National Motor Museum

The National Motor Museum's reputation as the centre for Australian motoring history continues to grow - a long way from its beginnings as a small private motorcycle museum in a disused flourmill in 1965. Its acquisition by the South Australian Government in 1976, and subsequent incorporation into the newly formed History Trust of South Australia in 1982, laid the foundation for the development of a museum of international standing and a major South Australian tourism attraction.  The Museum today displays over three hundred vehicles in three pavilions. It aims to present the history of the motor vehicle in Australia and the ways in which the motor vehicle has changed Australian society.

Hardys Tintara Cellar Door

McLaren Vale is home to two of Australia's great heritage wine brands, Hardys and Tintara, founded by English immigrant Thomas Hardy in 1853. Tintara has been one of the well known Australian wine names for over 140 years, its name derived from the Aboriginal word "Tinyinlara" in reference to the Orion constellation and means "a number of young men hunting emus and kangaroos in the sky". The disused McLaren Vale flour mill was converted by Thomas into a winery, the true beginning of McLaren Vale as a wine region. Both the Hardys and the Tintara range of wines are still made in the historic Tintara Cellars in McLaren Vale using many of the same techniques and equipment, such as open fermentation and basket presses, that would have been used by Thomas Hardy in his day.
