Itinerary Depart Akaroa, travel by road towards Governors Bay and Christchurch city (the South Island's largest). Stop at the Hilltop and the Sign of Kiwi
for stunning photos, continue to the centre of this charming city for sightseeing. Lyttelton harbour is 12kms long (9 miles) and is a major port for our South. Island, 1400 container ships
yearly, 48 cruise ship visits each summer (some return 3-4 times)
We stop at Little River Arts & Craft shop at the Historic old Railway station. Café for tea or coffee if you wish
(clients cost) See Lake Ellesmere/Te-Waihora an important food source Maori, eels, flounders, crabs etc. and Canadian geese. Now popular for duck shooting, season is 1st week May to mid June.
Stop at a local Cheese making factory, Barry's Bay. You can purchase also local wine here (cheese tastings included).
Arrive in beautiful Christchurch city for sightseeing. See Cathedral Square,
Victoria Square, Town Hall, Art Centre, Christ's College, Bridge of Remembrance, Botanic gardens, Mona Vale and Historic homestead, Sign of the Takahe, Sign of the Kiwi, Governors Bay, Lyttelton Harbour, Sumner Beach. Christchurch is one of the most English cities of all New Zealand, an easy-going charm with the emerging energy and verve of a metropolis. Modern but with old English Gothic architecture combine to blend a relaxed ambiance of a small town. Often referred to as the "Garden City" of the world!
We lunch (included in price) in the magnificient Botanic gardens restaurant/cafe or, if booked, similar location/standard. We depart lunch and drive by road back towards Akaroa via a
partly different route. On our way back to Akaroa we visit the beautiful French farm winery (tastings incl.) Return to shipside. |
