Auckland Full Day Maori Cultural Tour AKL-13

Join us on a full day Auckland Maori Culture Tour, so you can experience te taha Maori or Maori side of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland). You'll discover a landscape rich with Maori myths and legends and steeped in the history, both ancient and modern, of the tangata whenua (the people of the land).  This is a very personal tour, so we limit the group size to 6 persons, unless booking as a group, in which case we limit the group size to 11 persons.

 Tour Information

Itinerary

Visit the region's important Maori landmarks and monuments. Practise some Maori kawa (protocols) and tikanga (culture). Learn about some of the rangatira Maori (Maori leaders) who have shaped our nation's history.

Your Kaiarahi Maori (Maori guide) is usually Ceillhe Tewhare Teneti Hema Sperath, who is tangata whenua (one of the people of the land). She is a direct descendant of the Maori chiefs Patuone and his brother Tamati Waka Nene, both of whom shaped the Maori and colonial history of New Zealand. All our Maori guides, however, know Auckland exceptionally well and are passionate about our beautiful city & region.

In Auckland city, you will visit Mount Victoria in Devonport, the final resting place of Patuone, one of the chief negotiators and signatories of Aotearoa/ New Zealand's founding document. Patuone is one of Ceillhe's direct ancestors.

Visit Maungawhau (Mount Eden) – and see the city from the tallest and most dramatic of its ancient volcanoes, then walk on the edge of its beautiful, bush clad crater.

You will visit Te Wao Nui O Tiriwa, the indigenous forest covering the Waitakere Ranges to the west of Auckland and walk among unique indigenous trees and plants, learn their Maori names and their importance as both food and medicine. Meet some of our shy bush-dwelling native birds. Hear the lore and legends of the bush, before heading to the famous 'Wild West Coast' with its' the unique black sand beaches, windswept cliffs and roaring surf.

We will return you to your hotel or ship by 4.30pm.
