Itinerary
Leaving
your cruise ship at Port Chalmers, we travel north taking the back road over the hills to join the main highway, heading along the coast away from Dunedin to the famous Moeraki Boulders, just an
hours drive through stunning coastal scenery.
Arriving at Moeraki, you can wallk along the picturesque Koekohe beach to view these unusual spherical boulders that range in size from
0.5 – 2 metres in diameter. As we get close to them, you will see that some have split open, revealiong their inside, while others have retained their integrity. The larger
boulders took up to 5 millions years to form, created from precipitation of calcite from the pore waters within the Moeraki Formation, cemented by the Paloecene mudsdtone.
After exploring
these unusual rocks we take lunch at the Boulders Café that takes its shape from the boulders themselves. The views from your table are breathtaking as you gaze out over the Pacific Ocean.
After lunch we return to the city of Dunedin to soak up the beautiful architecture and the many seascapes visible from the elevated viewing points the city offers. Subject to cloud cover,
we will travel to the highest accessible point by road in Dunedin to the top of Mt. Cargill. Here you will have the best spectacular views of city and the coastline North and South of Dunedin.
We will also visit Dunedin Rail Station, one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand, and just one of the many historic buildings the city is renowned for that you will see
during the tour. Many were constructed through the boom years of the late 1800 and early 1900's when the city was one of the wealthiest in the country. Marvel also at the steepest street in
the world, Baldwin Street, where the annual Jaffa races [giant chocolate biscuits] are held down the steep incline.
If time permits you will have an opportunity for some special shopping
before returning to your ship. |
